Case IH 2186 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ENG): Supply Voltage to the accelerator pedal position sensor too low

The engine control module has detected that the reference voltage supplying the accelerator pedal position sensor (throttle sensor) has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. When this happens, the controller cannot accurately read the operator's throttle input, which typically forces the engine into a protective limp mode or restricts it to low idle.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the accelerator pedal for chafing, pinched wires, or areas shorting to the chassis ground.

   Disconnect the plug at the accelerator pedal position sensor and check for corrosion, moisture, pushed-back pins, or bent terminals.

   Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and measure the supply voltage pin at the sensor connector. It should read a steady 5V reference signal from the ECU.

   If the voltage is low at the connector, disconnect the harness at the ECU and test the supply wire for high resistance or a short to ground.

   If the 5V reference is present when the sensor is unplugged but drops significantly when plugged in, the sensor has an internal short and is pulling the voltage down.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or break in the harness, splice and heat-shrink the damaged wire, or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Sensor

   Locate the accelerator pedal assembly in the cab. Disconnect the electrical connector from the pedal position sensor. Unbolt the sensor or the entire pedal assembly. Install the new sensor/pedal assembly and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec. Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

   Relearn/Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Perform a pedal calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor or a diagnostic tool so the ECU can learn the new 0% and 100% throttle voltage limits.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Clear the inactive 2186 fault code from the Engine ECU. Start the tractor and verify smooth throttle response through the entire RPM range.
