Case IH 2191 – ZDC: ZDC CAN Message PTCDN1 Timeout

The Zone Drivetrain Controller (ZDC) has lost communication with the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ZDC expects to receive the PTCDN1 message over the CAN bus but is not receiving it within the required timeframe, indicating a CAN bus timeout or module failure.

   Verify the power supply to the ZDC module, including the switched key fuse (e.g., Fuse F-101, 5 Amp).

   Check the CAN bus wiring circuit between the Engine ECU and the ZDC for opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

   Inspect the harness connectors at both the ZDC and the Engine ECU for pushed-out pins, moisture intrusion, or corrosion.

   Check fuses

   Locate the cab power distribution module and test the fuses associated with the ZDC (such as F-101) and the Engine ECU. Replace any blown fuses.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the battery before proceeding with harness checks.

   Disconnect harnesses

   Disconnect the harness at the ZDC and the Engine ECU.

   Test CAN bus continuity

   Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the two modules. Repair any breaks or chafing in the harness.

   Clean connectors

   Clean the connector pins with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease if recommended by the manufacturer.

   Reconnect and test

   Reconnect the modules, restore battery power, and clear the fault codes to see if 2191 returns. If the wiring is intact and power is verified, one of the modules (ZDC or Engine ECU) may require software flashing or replacement.
