Case IH 2192 – ZDC (Transmission Controller): ZDC - CAN message PTCDN2 timeout

Indicates a loss of communication on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the 'PTCDN2' message broadcasted by the Engine Control Unit was not received by the ZDC (Transmission Controller) within a specific timeframe.

   Check Fuses: Verify the power supply to the ZDC module, specifically the F-101 5A fuse and the 7.5A main controller fuse.

   Inspect Wiring Harness: Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring between the Engine ECU and the ZDC for chafing, pinch points, or rodent damage.

   Check Connectors: Inspect the harness connectors at both the ZDC and the Engine ECU for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Measure CAN Resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate Modules

   Locate the Engine ECU (typically mounted on or near the engine block) and the ZDC module (typically located in the cab electronics bay or near the transmission).

   Clean and Reseat

   Disconnect the main harness connectors from both modules. Spray the pins and receptacles with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Ensure no pins are bent or recessed.

   Perform Continuity Testing

   Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the Engine ECU harness connector to the ZDC harness connector. If resistance is high or the circuit is open, locate and repair the break in the wiring harness.

   Verify Power and Ground

   Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Back-probe the ZDC connector to ensure it is receiving full battery voltage (12V+) on its power pins and has a solid ground.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect all modules, clear the inactive fault codes using an electronic service tool (EST), and test drive the tractor. If the wiring is perfect and the code immediately returns, the ZDC module or Engine ECU may require a firmware flash or replacement.
