Case IH 2193 – ZDC (Transmission Controller): ZDC - CAN message PTCDN3 timeout

Fault code 2193 indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure. Specifically, the "PTCDN3" message broadcast by the engine control unit has timed out or been lost, meaning the receiving module did not receive it within the programmed time threshold.

   Check Fuses and Power: Verify the switched power fuses for the ZDC controller (e.g., 5A or 7.5A fuse like F-101 or F-102 on Steiger models). A loss of power to the module can cause communication timeouts.

   Inspect CAN Bus Wiring: Check the CAN wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the ZDC for chafing, pinches, or breaks.

   Check Connectors: Disconnect the harnesses at the ZDC and the Engine ECU. Inspect for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

   Test Terminating Resistors: Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the batteries disconnected. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one terminating resistor is faulty or there is an open circuit.

   Disconnect Battery

   Always disconnect the machine's battery before performing electrical repairs.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or short in the CAN bus harness between the engine and the ZDC, splice and seal the wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

   Clean/Replace Connectors

   If corrosion is found at the ZDC or ECU pins, clean them thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner. Replace the connector pigtail if the corrosion is severe.

   Replace Terminating Resistor

   If the CAN bus resistance is out of spec, locate and replace the faulty CAN terminating resistor.

   Module Replacement/Flash

   If the wiring, power, and grounds are all perfect, the ZDC or Engine ECU may have an internal CAN transceiver failure. The ZDC would need to be replaced and reprogrammed using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
