Case IH 2196 – ZDC module: CAN message EEC2 timeout

Issue description

The transmission control module has failed to receive the expected Electronic Engine Controller 2 (EEC2) SAE J1939 data link message from the Engine Control Unit (ECU) within the required timeframe. The transmission controller usually defaults to an idle accelerator pedal signal to protect the machine.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Steiger CVT
  • Magnum CVX
  • Puma CVX

Check the cause

  1. Check the Engine ECU (EEC controller) to verify it is functional and does not have its own active fault codes preventing it from broadcasting CAN messages.

  2. Visually inspect the CAN-Bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the ZDC (CVT controller) for physical breaks, chafing, or disconnected connectors.

  3. Test the CAN-Bus wiring for a short circuit to the vehicle ground or a short circuit to battery voltage.

  4. Check for electromagnetic interference on the CAN-Bus, which is often caused by damaged shielding or aftermarket electronics spliced into the bus.

Repair steps

  1. Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Locate the Engine ECU and the ZDC (CVT) controller on the tractor.

  3. Disconnect the CAN-Bus harness connectors at both modules.

  4. Using a digital multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the two modules.

If an open circuit is found, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  5. Test the CAN wires for continuity to ground and to battery power.

If a short is detected, locate the chafed wire and repair it.

  6. Inspect the connector terminals at both modules.

Clean them with an approved electrical contact cleaner and ensure all pins are seated tightly without being pushed back into the connector body.

  7. Reconnect the harness to both the Engine ECU and the ZDC module.

  8. Reconnect the battery, cycle the ignition, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes.

  9. Operate the tractor to verify if code 2196 returns.

If the wiring is verified good but the code persists, the Engine ECU or ZDC module may require a software flash or replacement.
