Case IH 2198 – ZDC: ZDC - CAN message EEC3 timeout

Issue description

Communication failure on the J1939 CAN bus network where the transmission controller (ZDC) has stopped receiving the EEC3 (Electronic Engine Controller 3) message from the Engine Control Module (ECM) within the expected timeframe.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., EEC1, EEC2, ENGINE CONF) to determine if the entire CAN bus is down or just the EEC3 broadcast.

  2. Visually inspect the CAN-Bus wiring harness between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the ZDC for chafed wires, pinch points, or melted insulation.

  3. Inspect the connectors at both the ECM and the ZDC for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  4. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port (should read exactly 60 ohms).

  5. Test the CAN wires for continuity to vehicle ground or battery voltage to check for shorts.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Access the Modules

    Locate the ZDC (usually located in the cab console or under the cab floor, depending on the model) and the Engine ECM (mounted on the side of the engine block).

  3. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the main harness from both the ZDC and the ECM. Spray the pins and receptacles with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Ensure no pins are bent. Reconnect them firmly, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If your multimeter tests in the diagnostic phase revealed an open circuit or a short to ground in the CAN lines, trace the harness to find the break. Splice and solder the broken CAN High or CAN Low wire, and seal it with dual-wall adhesive heat shrink to prevent moisture intrusion.

  5. Check Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN resistance was 120 ohms instead of 60 ohms, locate and replace the failed CAN terminating resistor on the network.

  6. Software Update

    If the wiring tests perfectly, the issue may be a software anomaly where the ECM stops broadcasting the EEC3 message. Contact a Case IH dealer to flash the ECM and ZDC with the latest software calibration.

  7. Clear and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (like the Case IH EST), and test drive the tractor under load to verify the code does not return.
