Case IH 22 – Central Controller (XCM) or EHR (Electronic Hitch Control) Control Unit: Draft Sensitivity Control Voltage High

Issue description

The system is receiving a voltage signal from the draft sensitivity control potentiometer that exceeds the normal operating range. This is typically caused by either a damaged potentiometer or a wiring harness that has shorted to a +12 Volt power source.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • CX
  • MX

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the draft sensitivity control potentiometer to the Central Controller (XCM) for chafed wires, pinched lines, or exposed copper

  2. Use a multimeter to test the potentiometer circuit for a short to +12 Volts

  3. Test the draft sensitivity control potentiometer itself for internal damage, dead spots, or incorrect resistance values

  4. Verify the connections at the Central Controller (XCM) to ensure no pins are bent, corroded, or loose

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to protect the electrical system.

  2. Access the Potentiometer

Locate the draft sensitivity control knob on the operator's side console or armrest and carefully remove the paneling to access the potentiometer.

  3. Inspect and Repair Wiring

Disconnect the harness from the potentiometer. If your multimeter tests confirmed a short to +12V in the harness, trace the wire back to the XCM and repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring.

  4. Replace the Potentiometer

If the wiring is intact, the potentiometer is internally damaged. Remove the retaining nut/screws, pull out the faulty potentiometer, and install the OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble

Reconnect the wiring harness, secure the console paneling, and reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

Turn the key on and use the tractor's H-Menu or a diagnostic tool to clear the error code.

  7. Calibrate

Perform the hydraulic lift auto-calibration procedure. This is strictly required on most Case IH models when hitch control components or potentiometers are replaced.

  8. Test

Operate the tractor and test the draft control system to ensure normal operation and verify that Code 22 does not return.

Parts you might need

(5)
  • Draft Sensitivity Control Potentiometer / Hitch Position Potentiometer

    A186061

Common for Case IH CX and MX series. Verify exact part number against tractor's specific serial number.

  • Draft Sensitivity Control Potentiometer / Hitch Position Potentiometer

    142087A1

Fits various Case IH / McCormick models. Verify exact part number against tractor's specific serial number.

  • Draft Sensitivity Control Potentiometer / Hitch Position Potentiometer

    87399300

CNH Genuine Part for newer Puma/Maxxum/New Holland equivalents. Verify exact part number against tractor's specific serial number.

  • Wiring Harness

Generic part name; specific part number depends entirely on the tractor model and cab configuration.

  • Central Controller / XCM

Generic part name; only replace if the controller itself is proven faulty after harness and potentiometer checks.
