Case IH 22 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) controller: Single draft pin sensor failed when configured for one draft pin sensor

Issue description

The system has detected a failure (such as an open circuit, short circuit, or out-of-range voltage) in the draft sensing pin circuit on a tractor configured to use only one draft pin for its 3-point hitch draft control system.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH Magnum Series (215, 235, 245, 250, 255, 275, 280, 290, 305, 310, 315, 335, 340)
  • Case IH MX / TG Series (MX180, MX200, MX210, MX220, MX240, MX255, MX270, MX285)
  • Older Case IH Magnum Series (7100, 7200, and 8900 series)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the draft pin sensor for continuity, damaged wires, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power (+12 Volts)

  2. Test the signal voltage of the draft pin sensor to see if it is reading too high or too low

  3. Test the resistance of the draft pin sensor across its pins (e.g., Pin A to Pin C, Pin B to Pin C) to verify it is within the specified ohm range

  4. Verify that the central controller (TMF/XCM) is outputting the correct reference voltage to the sensor

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Disconnect the battery or power down the tractor to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the faulty draft pin sensor on the lower links of the 3-point hitch.

  3. Inspect connector

Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector and inspect for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins. Clean or repair the connector if necessary.

  4. Repair harness

If the wiring harness is damaged, repair the broken wires or replace the harness section.

  5. Replace sensor

If the harness tests fine but the sensor fails the resistance/voltage test, remove the faulty draft pin sensor and install a new OEM replacement pin.

  6. Install bypass kit (optional)

Alternative Bypass (Older Models): If you are working on an older Magnum (e.g., 7100, 7200, 8900, or MX series) and no longer need the draft sensing function, you can install a 'Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit.' This plugs into the harness to bypass the system, disabling the electronic draft control while allowing normal up/down function of the 3-point hitch without throwing codes.

  7. Test system

Reconnect the battery, clear the error codes from the TMF/Armrest controller, and test the hitch system for normal operation.
