Case IH 22 – Transmission ECM: Solenoid A Short Circuit Error

Issue description

This fault code indicates a power supply diagnostic error on the Solenoid A (Forward/Clutch A) circuit. The system has detected a short to ground, a short to a 5V/12V power supply, or an open circuit. As a safety measure, the controller disables the solenoid valves, resulting in the clutch pedal and shuttle lever being disabled (CP/SL Dis).

Applies to these machines

  • JXC
  • Farmall C
  • Farmall 95U
  • Farmall 105U
  • Farmall 115U
  • JX
  • JXU
  • Maxxum 100-140
  • Puma
  • TN60A
  • TN70A
  • TN75A
  • TN95A
  • T4
  • T5000
  • T6000

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the Transmission ECM and Solenoid A for chafed wires causing a short to ground or power.

  2. Disconnect the Solenoid A and Transmission ECM connectors to check for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Measure the resistance of Solenoid A with a multimeter to check for thermal degradation or an internal short.

  4. Verify that the 5V and 8V sensor supply circuits from the ECM are intact and not shorting out the controller.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Before carrying out any electrical service operations, disconnect and isolate the battery negative lead.

  2. Locate Solenoid A

Locate the transmission control valve block (usually on the side of the transmission housing) and identify Solenoid A (Forward/Clutch A solenoid).

  3. Repair wiring

If diagnostic checks revealed a broken or chafed wire in the transmission harness, repair the wire using appropriate weatherproof splices or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace solenoid

If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining bolt/nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve spool. Slide the old solenoid off and install the new OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble components

Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

  6. Test and calibrate

Reconnect the battery negative lead. Start the tractor and verify that the fault code is cleared. Test the forward/reverse shuttle operation. Perform a transmission clutch calibration routine if required by the specific model.
