Case IH 2200 – ZDC: ZDC - CAN message FE timeout
Issue description
Communication failure on the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The ZDC module expected to receive a designated CAN message (identified by the hex value 'FE') within a programmed timeframe, but the message timed out. This means the module broadcasting the 'FE' message has either stopped transmitting, or the physical CAN bus wiring is preventing the message from reaching the ZDC.

Check the cause
Disconnect the tractor's battery and measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (a healthy CAN bus should read exactly 60 ohms)
If the resistance reading is 120 ohms, check for a missing, unplugged, or failed terminating resistor
If the resistance reading is open (infinite resistance), check for a hard break in the wiring
Locate the ZDC controller and visually inspect the wiring harness connectors for pushed pins, corrosion, or water intrusion
Verify that the ZDC module is receiving proper battery voltage and has a clean ground connection (check the 5A or 7.5A switched key fuse)
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Isolate the Fault
Based on the resistance test above, trace the CAN bus backbone. If the resistance was 120 ohms, locate the terminating resistors (one is often internal to the Engine ECU, while the other is an external plug on the harness).
Repair Wiring/Resistors
If a terminating resistor is faulty or missing, plug in a replacement 120-ohm resistor. If a wire is chafed or broken (causing an open circuit), splice and seal the CAN High or CAN Low wire using an approved OEM harness repair kit.
Check the Sending Module
If the wiring and resistors are perfectly intact (60 ohms), the module responsible for broadcasting message 'FE' may be offline. Check the fuses for the Cab Controller and Engine ECU.
Software/Module Replacement
If all physical layer checks pass, the ZDC module may require a software re-flash by a dealer using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). If the module has suffered an internal hardware failure, it must be replaced and programmed to the tractor.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, cycle the key, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 2200 fault code.
