Case IH 2201 – ZDC: ZDC - CAN message TSC1_VE timeout
Issue description
Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure where the expected TSC1_VE (Torque/Speed Control 1 - Vehicle to Engine) CAN message has timed out. The engine is no longer receiving torque/speed commands from the transmission/vehicle controller within the required millisecond timeframe, forcing the machine into a derated or safe-idle mode.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying CAN bus timeout codes (such as U1124, 3338, or 91CB/92CB) which indicate a global CAN bus failure rather than a single module failure.
Inspect the CAN Node A Bus (CAN High and CAN Low lines) for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or open circuits.
Test the CAN terminating resistors with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms across the CAN bus).
Inspect wiring harness connectors at both the ZDC module and the Engine ECU for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Verify power and ground to the ZDC controller by checking the 5A and 7.5A fuses for the main and function circuits.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the ZDC and ECU
Locate the Engine ECU (typically mounted on the side of the FPT engine) and the ZDC Transmission Controller (usually located in the cab electronics bay or near the transmission valve body, depending on the model).
Harness Continuity Test
Disconnect the harness from both modules. Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ZDC and the ECU.
Repair Wiring
If resistance is excessively high or an open circuit is found, locate the chafe point in the chassis harness and repair the wiring using OEM-approved splice connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Clean and Reseat
If the wiring tests good, clean the connector pins with electronic contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease to the seals (not directly on the pins) and firmly reseat the connectors.
Clear and Retest
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), clear the inactive fault codes, and perform a test drive to verify that the CVT and engine are communicating torque commands properly.
Module Replacement
If the wiring, fuses, and terminating resistors are perfect but the TSC1_VE message still times out, the ZDC module or Engine ECU has suffered an internal CAN transceiver failure and must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
