Case IH 2202 – ZDC: ZDC - CAN message TSC1_VER timeout
Issue description
Communication failure on the tractor's CAN bus where the transmission controller (ZDC) did not receive the required engine speed/torque broadcast (TSC1_VER) from the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) within the programmed timeframe.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Steiger series (e.g., 420, 435)
- Case IH Magnum CVT series (e.g., 380 CVT)
- Case IH Puma CVX series (e.g., 165 CVX)
- Case IH Maxxum CVX series (e.g., 145 CVX, 150 CVX)
Check the cause
Check tractor voltage supply to ensure sufficient voltage, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN bus.
Inspect all ground connections to ensure they are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.
Test CAN terminators by checking the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should typically read 60 ohms with the battery disconnected).
Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (such as VCM2EDC or BC2EDC2) which may indicate a physical break in the CAN backbone rather than a single module failure.
Repair steps
Power down tractor
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during testing.
Inspect wiring harness
Trace the CAN bus wiring harness between the ZDC (CVT controller) and the Engine Control Module. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation.
Clean connectors
Disconnect the harness connectors at the ZDC and the ECM. Inspect the pins for pushed-back terminals, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Replace CAN terminators
If the CAN terminators test out of specification, replace them. For Steiger models, install the updated terminator available from the dealer.
Test modules with diagnostic tool
If wiring, grounds, and terminators are good, use a dealer diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST) to monitor live CAN traffic and determine if the ZDC or ECM is failing to process or send the signal.
