2206 (517959.05) - DEC

Case IH 2206 (517959.05) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Clutch EVEN Solenoid - open circuit

Issue description

The controller has detected that the electrical connection to the Even Clutch Solenoid has failed open, or the solenoid coil itself has suffered an internal break or short to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH MX Series (e.g., MX215, MX235, MX285, MX305)
  • TG Series tractors

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Transmission Control Unit to the Even Clutch Solenoid for any visible damage, chafing, or broken wires

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Even Clutch Solenoid and check for corrosion, loose pins, or debris that could cause an open circuit

  3. Use a multimeter to test the Even Clutch Solenoid coil for resistance to confirm if it has an internal open circuit or is shorted to ground

  4. Verify that the solenoid is not shorted to +12 Volts (the system can sometimes throw related codes if current is sensed while the driver circuit is commanded off)

Repair steps

  1. Locate valve body

Locate the transmission powershift valve body on the tractor. It is typically located on the left side of the transmission housing, just to the rear of the steps, with the solenoids facing outward.

  2. Identify solenoid

Identify the Even Clutch Solenoid among the valve stack (the stack houses the Odd, Even, C1-C5, and Master clutch solenoids).

  3. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the Even Clutch Solenoid.

  4. Remove retaining nut

    Remove the solenoid retaining nut.

  5. Remove solenoid

Carefully remove the solenoid coil and cartridge from the valve body.

  6. Install new solenoid

Install the new replacement solenoid cartridge and coil.

  7. Torque to spec

Torque the new components to the proper specifications. Dealer forum data indicates approximately 18 ft-lbs for the cartridge and 5-6 ft-lbs for the solenoid retaining nut. Do not over-torque, as this can damage the valve.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical wiring harness.

  9. Clear codes and test

Clear the fault codes from the Transmission Control Unit and test the tractor to ensure proper shifting and that the code does not return.
