Case IH 2206 – ZDC: ZDC - Battery voltage high condition detected, OVER 16VOLTS
Issue description
This fault code indicates an overvoltage condition in the machine's electrical system. Specifically, the control module has detected that the system voltage has exceeded 16 volts. A reading over 16 volts typically means the alternator's voltage regulator has failed and is overcharging the system.

Check the cause
Verify System Voltage (Engine Off): Use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the machine off. It should read around 12.4V to 12.8V.
Verify System Voltage (Engine Running): Start the engine and measure the voltage at the battery terminals at idle and at high RPM. If the multimeter reads 15.5V to 16V+, the alternator is actively overcharging the system.
Check the ZDC Module Power Supply: If the battery voltage at the batteries is normal (e.g., 14.2V) while running, back-probe the power supply pins at the ZDC module harness. If the voltage at the module is normal but the module still reports >16V, the ZDC module itself may have an internal fault in its voltage-sensing circuit.
Inspect Wiring and Grounds: Check the main chassis grounds, battery cables, and the alternator sense wire. A broken or highly resistant voltage sense wire can cause the alternator to output maximum voltage because it thinks the battery is dead.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the battery disconnect switch or remove the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Address the Charging System
If the diagnostic checks confirmed the alternator is overcharging (outputting >16V), the alternator or its internal voltage regulator must be replaced.
Remove the Alternator
Disconnect the electrical connectors from the rear of the alternator. Release the serpentine belt tensioner and remove the belt from the alternator pulley. Unbolt and remove the alternator.
Install the New Alternator
Mount the replacement alternator, torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec, reinstall the drive belt, and reconnect the electrical terminals.
Inspect the Batteries
Overcharging boils battery acid. Check the battery cases for swelling, venting, or acid leaks. Load-test the batteries and replace them if they were damaged by the overvoltage condition.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify the charging voltage is now stable between 13.5V and 14.5V. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the 2206 fault code from the ZDC module.
