Case IH 2209 (517959.17) - DEC – Transmission Controller (Trans / ATC): Even Clutch Solenoid Low Side Driver (LSD) shorted to ground (GND)

Issue description

The Low Side Driver (LSD) circuit for the Even Clutch Solenoid is shorted to ground (GND). The transmission controller monitors the electrical circuit that commands the even gears' clutch pack. A short to ground means the electrical current is bypassing the intended load (the solenoid coil) and going directly to the chassis ground, which prevents the controller from properly modulating the clutch.

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the Even Clutch Solenoid for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points against the transmission housing that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Circuit Testing (Low Side Driver): Disconnect the Even Clutch Solenoid. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the Low Side Driver wire (at the solenoid connector) and a known good chassis ground. If continuity exists, the harness is shorted and must be repaired.

  3. Solenoid Coil Resistance: Measure the resistance across the pins of the Even Clutch Solenoid itself. If the resistance is out of specification (reading near 0 ohms), the solenoid is internally shorted and requires replacement.

  4. Controller Pin Check: Inspect the pins at the Transmission Controller for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins.

Repair steps

  1. Power down tractor

    Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery to protect the Transmission Controller.

  2. Locate valve block

    Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Identify solenoid

    Identify the Even Clutch Solenoid (refer to the specific tractor's hydraulic schematic for exact valve block positioning).

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid.

  5. Clean area

    If the diagnostic checks proved the solenoid is internally shorted, clean the area around the valve block to prevent debris from entering the transmission.

  6. Remove hardware

    Unthread/remove the retaining hardware for the Even Clutch Solenoid cartridge.

  7. Remove old solenoid

    Remove the old solenoid and discard the old O-rings.

  8. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid.

  9. Install new solenoid

    Install the new solenoid into the valve block and torque to OEM specifications.

  10. Reconnect and clear codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes using the diagnostic monitor.

  11. Perform calibration

    Perform a transmission calibration/test drive to verify proper shifting through the even gears.
