Case IH 2216 – ZDC Module: Neutral Switch Activated Longer than Expected

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected the Neutral switch (part of the Forward-Neutral-Reverse-Park or FNRP circuit) remaining in the activated (closed) state for an abnormally long duration while the tractor is in operation. This typically means the switch has mechanically failed closed, the neutral circuit is shorted to power/ground, or there is a calibration/communication error between the shuttle lever and the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Perform an instrumentation check: Turn the key ON. With the FNR lever in Park or Neutral, a box should appear around the 'N' icon on the dash display. When moved to Forward or Reverse, the box should disappear. If the 'N' remains boxed regardless of lever position, the neutral switch has failed closed or the circuit is shorted.

  2. Perform a continuity test at the switch: Disconnect the cover panel under the steering column or on the multi-controller armrest to access the FNRP switch connector. Measure resistance across the switch pins (typically 500-600 Ohms in gear, and 2500-3000 Ohms in other positions). If it reads a dead short or open out of sequence, the switch is faulty.

  3. Perform a harness check: If the switch tests good, check the wiring harness from the FNRP connector to the ZDC transmission controller for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to a voltage source.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate Power

    Turn off the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the FNRP Pod

    Remove the plastic cowling around the steering column or the access panel on the multi-controller armrest to expose the FNR shuttle lever assembly.

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

    Unplug the electrical connector leading to the FNR switch. Inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or moisture ingress.

  4. Replace the Switch

    If the diagnostic continuity test proved the switch has failed closed, unbolt the FNR switch/sensor assembly from the shuttle lever housing and install the replacement part.

  5. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the switch was functional but the harness failed the continuity check to the ZDC module, locate the chafed or pinched wire (commonly found where the harness routes down the steering column tilt mechanism) and repair it using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the harness, reinstall the cowling, and reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (like the Case IH Electronic Service Tool - EST) to clear the inactive 2216 fault code.

  7. Test Operation

    Start the tractor and cycle the shuttle lever through Forward, Neutral, and Reverse to ensure the transmission engages properly and the 'N' icon behaves correctly on the dash.
