2219 (6153.04) - DEC

Case IH 2219 (6153.04) - DEC – DEC: Synchro 2 Solenoid - short to GND

Issue description

An electrical circuit failure where the electrical current intended for the Synchro 2 Solenoid is finding a premature path to the machine's chassis (ground), preventing the solenoid from operating.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum series
  • Magnum 210
  • Magnum (180-240)
  • Maxxum (110-145)
  • Puma (130-240)
  • Combines (5130-9250 series)

Check the cause

  1. Locate the Synchro 2 Solenoid on the transmission housing and visually inspect the wiring harness for melt spots, chafing against the chassis, or corrosion.

  2. Disconnect the solenoid and test the wiring harness with a multimeter to determine if the short to ground is in the wiring before the connector.

  3. Test the internal resistance of the Synchro 2 Solenoid. If the resistance is near zero, the solenoid has an internal short.

  4. If the wiring and solenoid test good, inspect the control module (DEC/TCU) for water damage or pin corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Power down the machine and disconnect the battery

Power down the machine and disconnect the battery to protect the CAN bus network.

  2. Clean the area around the Synchro 2 Solenoid

Clean the area around the Synchro 2 Solenoid on the transmission to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid.

  4. Repair the chafed wire

If the diagnostic checks pointed to a wiring issue, repair the chafed wire and wrap it in protective loom.

  5. Unbolt/unscrew the solenoid cartridge

If the solenoid is internally shorted, unbolt/unscrew the solenoid cartridge from the valve body. (Use penetrant oil if the threads are stubborn to avoid damaging the housing).

  6. Install the new solenoid

Install the new solenoid with fresh O-rings (lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid).

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery

Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  8. Clear the stored fault codes

Clear the stored fault codes using the machine's AFS Pro display or a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
