Case IH 2224 – ZDC: Transmission Lubrication Oil Pressure Sensor Supply Voltage is Short to Ground

Issue description

The 5-volt reference circuit supplying power to the sensor is grounding out (reading 0 volts). Because the sensor is not receiving its required supply voltage, it cannot send a valid analog pressure signal back to the controller, resulting in a loss of transmission pressure monitoring.

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the ZDC controller to the transmission lubrication oil pressure sensor. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the transmission case, or exposed copper touching the chassis (which would cause the short to ground).

  2. Sensor Isolation Test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the sensor. If the active fault code changes from a 'Short to Ground' to an 'Open Circuit' or 'Voltage High,' the wiring is intact, and the sensor itself has an internal short.

  3. Voltage Check: With the key ON and engine OFF, use a multimeter to check the supply pin on the harness connector. It should read a steady 5V reference. If it reads 0V with the sensor unplugged, the short is in the wiring harness or the ZDC controller pins.

  4. Fluid Check: Verify the transmission fluid level and condition, as low fluid can cause actual pressure drops that may trigger secondary mechanical codes.

Repair steps

  1. Locate wiring damage

    If the wiring harness is faulty: Locate the chafed or shorted section of the wire.

  2. Repair wiring

    Cut out the damaged section and repair it using weather-sealed splice connectors and heat shrink tubing.

  3. Secure harness

    Secure the harness away from sharp edges or high-heat areas using zip ties.

  4. Locate sensor

    If the sensor is internally shorted: Locate the transmission lubrication oil pressure sensor on the transmission case. Note: On some Maxxum and Puma models, this requires removing a small access panel to reach the sensor block.

  5. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic circuit.

  6. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the sealed weather-pack electrical connector.

  7. Remove sensor

    Unscrew the faulty sensor from the transmission housing.

  8. Apply sealant

    Apply a dab of hydraulic-safe thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied).

  9. Install sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the port and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  10. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  11. Clear codes and verify

    Clear the fault codes from the ZDC controller and start the tractor. Verify that the dashboard warning lights are off and that the display is receiving accurate transmission pressure readings.
