Case IH 2230 – ZDC: ZDC - CAN message DispDrivetrainStateDes timeout

Issue description

The expected communication message communicating the operator's desired drivetrain state from the cab display to the transmission controller was not received within the programmed time limit, indicating a loss of communication over the CAN bus network.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Puma 150
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 185
  • Puma 200
  • Puma 220
  • Puma 240
  • Magnum 180
  • Magnum 200
  • Magnum 220
  • Steiger Series
  • CVX 170

Check the cause

  1. Check for multiple CAN timeout codes using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to rule out a main CAN bus short or failed terminating resistor

  2. Inspect wiring harness connectors at the ZDC module and cab display (DISP) for loose, bent, pushed-back, or corroded pins

  3. Verify the ZDC is receiving a steady 12V supply and has a clean ground

  4. Measure resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Circuit

Disconnect the battery. Locate the ZDC (CVT Controller) and the main cab display.

  2. Perform Continuity Testing

Disconnect the harness from the ZDC and the display. Use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for continuity from end to end.

  3. Check for Shorts

Test the CAN wires for a short to ground or a short to power. Repair any chafed or broken wires in the harness.

  4. Clean and Reconnect

If the wiring tests good, apply dielectric grease to the connectors to prevent moisture intrusion and securely reconnect the ZDC and the display.

  5. Software Verification

Connect the Case IH EST. Check if there is a software update available for the ZDC or the Display (DISP). CNH frequently releases software patches (e.g., software part numbers 51624286 or 51645502) to resolve ghost communication timeouts.

  6. Module Replacement

If the wiring is perfect, power/ground is verified, and software is up to date, the ZDC module's internal CAN transceiver has likely failed and the module must be replaced.

  7. Calibration

If the ZDC is replaced, you must use the EST to program the new module and perform a transmission calibration before returning the tractor to service.

Parts you might need
