Issue description

The control module is detecting a voltage on the solenoid's signal or ground return circuit that is higher than the expected operating range (typically a short to a 5V reference or 12V battery power). This condition prevents the solenoid from operating correctly, which will likely result in the transmission failing to shift into the gear range associated with the #7 synchronizer.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Short to Power: Disconnect the harness at the Synchro 7 Solenoid and at the DEC module. Probe the solenoid signal wire with a multimeter to check for continuity or voltage bleed-over from a 12V or 5V power source.

  2. Check Solenoid Resistance: Measure the resistance (ohms) across the pins of the Synchro 7 Solenoid itself. Compare the reading to a known good synchronizer solenoid on the same transmission valve block. An internal short in the solenoid coil will show an out-of-spec (very low) resistance reading.

  3. Check Harness Ground: Verify that the ground return circuit for the solenoid has continuity to the ECU ground pin and is not shorted to a voltage supply.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Fault

    If the multimeter tests reveal voltage on the signal wire when the module is unplugged, the wiring harness is chafed and shorting to a power wire. If the harness tests good but the solenoid resistance is out of specification, the solenoid itself has failed internally.

  2. Harness Repair

    If a short is found in the wiring, trace the transmission harness back from the valve block to the DEC module. Locate the chafed section, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness.

  3. Solenoid Replacement

    If the solenoid is internally shorted: Clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent debris from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Synchro 7 Solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the solenoid in the valve body. Extract the faulty solenoid and discard the old O-rings. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Install the new solenoid, torque the retaining bolts to OEM spec, and reconnect the harness.

  4. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Reconnect the DEC module, turn the key ON, and clear the fault codes. You may need to perform a transmission synchronizer calibration procedure via the instrument cluster or diagnostic tool so the DEC can relearn the engagement points.
