Case IH 2238 – ZDC: Reverse Requested but Reverse Gear not Engaged Within Expected Time

Issue description

Indicates a synchronization or actuation failure within the transmission system. When the operator shuttles the tractor into reverse, the transmission controller sends a command to the reverse engagement valve/solenoid. If the controller does not receive a return signal confirming that the reverse gear has physically or hydraulically engaged within the programmed millisecond time window, it logs this fault to prevent transmission slippage or damage.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect (CVT models)
  • Case IH Magnum CVT models
  • Case IH Puma CVX / CVT models

Check the cause

  1. Verify transmission fluid levels and check the hydraulic pressure at the reverse engagement valve test port to rule out low pressure delaying engagement

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ZDC controller to the reverse engagement solenoid for chafed wires, corrosion at the connectors, or loose pins

  3. Measure the resistance (Ohms) of the reverse engagement solenoid to ensure it is within OEM spec and not shorted or open

  4. Check the transmission output speed sensors and directional sensors, as the ZDC relies on these via the CAN bus to verify gear engagement

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

Clear the fault code via the tractor's diagnostic display and attempt to shuttle between forward and reverse to see if the code is active or stored.

  2. Calibrate the Transmission

Run the CVT transmission calibration procedure through the tractor's monitor. Over time, clutch pack wear can cause engagement delays; recalibration teaches the ZDC the new fill times for the clutch packs.

  3. Replace Faulty Components

If calibration fails or electrical tests show a fault, replace the reverse engagement solenoid or repair the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  4. Final Verification

After replacing parts, perform a final transmission calibration and test drive the tractor under load to ensure reverse engages smoothly without logging the code.
