Case IH 2240 (6158.03) - DEC – DEC: Synchro 7 Solenoid - LSD short to high voltage
Issue description
The DEC controls the solenoid by providing a ground path (the low side). A 'short to high voltage' (FMI 03) means the controller is detecting battery voltage (or VCC) on the ground-control circuit when it shouldn't be, indicating that the wiring harness is shorted to a power source, the solenoid coil has internally shorted to power, or the DEC module has an internal driver failure.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Case IH Steiger Series
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH MX, MTX, MC, and CX (Synchro) Series
Check the cause
Ensure the engine is off, the parking brake is engaged, and all hydraulic pressure is relieved.
Inspect the transmission valve block wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause the Low Side wire to touch a 12V power wire.
Disconnect the Synchro 7 solenoid and the DEC module connectors to check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.
With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and measure voltage on the Low Side (ground) pin of the solenoid connector (12V indicates a short to power).
Measure the resistance across the pins of the Synchro 7 solenoid (healthy is typically around 6.8 Ohms; out of limits or continuity to the body indicates a shorted coil).
Repair steps
Relieve hydraulic pressure
Shut down the tractor and actuate the hydraulic levers to relieve residual pressure from the transmission circuits before removing any covers or valves.
Isolate the fault
Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the short to high voltage is located in the wiring harness, the solenoid coil, or the DEC module.
Replace the solenoid (if faulty)
Clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical plug, unbolt the solenoid coil/valve assembly from the manifold, and install the new solenoid valve torqued to OEM specifications.
Repair wiring harness (if faulty)
Locate the short-to-power in the harness and splice/heat-shrink the damaged wire, or replace the affected transmission harness section.
Clear fault codes
Reconnect all components. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop or the tractor's ICU/display to clear the inactive fault codes.
