Case IH 2240 – ZDC: Neutral Requested but Transmission not in Neutral Within Expected Time

The operator (via the shuttle lever) or the system has commanded the transmission to shift into neutral, but the transmission controller has not detected the transmission physically entering the neutral state—or hasn't received the corresponding neutral confirmation signal—within the programmed time limit.

   Check Shuttle Handle Inputs: Verify Forward/Neutral/Reverse inputs using a diagnostic tool to ensure signals are floating when Neutral is requested.

   Inspect the Neutral Start Switch / Safety Neutral Switch for proper operation, physical damage, or misalignment.

   Check Wiring and Voltage: Verify battery voltage and ground connections to the ZDC controller and the neutral switch circuit for voltage drops or damaged wiring.

   Hydraulic/Valve Check: Ensure there is no contamination or sticking in the transmission control valves that would physically prevent the CVT from disengaging.

   Verify the Code

   Connect the Case IH diagnostic tool (such as the Jaltest or EST software) to verify that fault code 2240 is active in the ZDC module.

   Access the Switches

   Locate the Neutral Start Switch and shuttle lever connections (often located under the sheet metal/console where the shift levers protrude or directly on the transmission housing).

   Test the Neutral Switch

   Disconnect the Neutral Start Switch and test for continuity. It should show a closed circuit only when the transmission/lever is physically in the neutral position. If it fails to open/close correctly, replace the switch.

   Inspect the Harness

   Trace the wiring harness between the shuttle lever, the Neutral Start Switch, and the ZDC controller. Look for chafed wires, loose connectors, or bent pins. Repair any open or shorted circuits.

   Inspect Transmission Valves

   If the electrical inputs and sensors are functioning perfectly, inspect the CVT transmission control valves (engagement valves). Clean or replace any sticking valves that are delaying the physical shift into neutral.

   Clear and Test

   Clear the fault code via the diagnostic tool and test operate the tractor, shifting between forward, reverse, and neutral to ensure the transmission disengages within the expected time limit.
