2241

Case IH 2241 – ZDC: Engine Speed Variation Impossible (Commanded vs. Actual Engine Speed)

Issue description

This indicates a closed-loop control failure. The transmission/drivetrain controller is commanding a specific engine RPM to match the load or operator input, but the actual engine speed being reported back by the sensors does not match the commanded value.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Steiger CVT
  • Case IH Puma CVX / CVT
  • Case IH Maxxum CVX / CVT
  • Case IH Optum CVX

Check the cause

  1. Check the Engine Speed Sensor for proper voltage and resistance to ensure it is reporting accurate RPMs.

  2. Verify the CAN bus communication lines between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the ZDC (CVT Controller).

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the engine speed sensor to the ECM for chafing, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

  4. Ensure there are no severe mechanical loads or fuel delivery issues preventing the engine from physically reaching the commanded RPM.

Repair steps

  1. Clear fault codes

Clear the inactive fault codes to see if 2241 is an active or stored (historical) code.

  2. Replace Engine Speed Sensor

Replace the Engine Speed Sensor if sensor output voltages are out of specification.

  3. Repair CAN wiring

Repair any damaged CAN wiring between the ZDC and the engine ECM.

  4. Recalibrate CVT and engine communication

Recalibrate the CVT and engine communication via the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) if a module is replaced.
