2242 (519182.05) - DEC

Case IH 2242 (519182.05) - DEC – Transmission Controller: Synchro 8 Solenoid - open circuit

Issue description

The fault code indicates an electrical failure in the transmission system, specifically an open circuit in the Synchro 8 solenoid circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • CX100
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission Controller to the Synchro 8 solenoid for cut wires, chafing, or melted insulation

  2. Disconnect the harness at the solenoid and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the Synchro 8 solenoid coil (infinite resistance/OL indicates a broken internal coil)

  4. Check the continuity of the wiring harness between the solenoid connector and the Transmission Controller pins to rule out a broken wire

  5. Verify that the transmission controller and the solenoid circuit are receiving proper voltage to rule out a blown fuse or failed relay

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the Synchro 8 solenoid on the transmission control valve manifold (usually located on the side or top of the transmission housing).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Depending on the valve design, either remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem and slide the electromagnetic coil off, or unscrew the entire solenoid cartridge valve from the manifold block.

  5. Install the New Part

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem (or thread the new cartridge into the block). Ensure any O-rings are properly seated and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid. Tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  6. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the wiring harness. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's display to clear the fault codes. Test operate the tractor to ensure the transmission shifts properly and the 2242 code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Synchro 8 Solenoid / Coil

    87420953

Examples of CNH transmission/hydraulic solenoids. Always verify the exact part number using the machine's serial number.

  • Synchro 8 Solenoid / Coil

    183038A1

Examples of CNH transmission/hydraulic solenoids. Always verify the exact part number using the machine's serial number.

  • Wiring Harness / Pigtail

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire at the connector, a replacement connector pigtail or harness section (e.g., rear frame harness) may be required.
