Case IH 2242 – ZDC: ZDC - Vehicle Overspeed with Transmission Engaged

The tractor is traveling at a ground speed that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold while the transmission is actively in gear. This can occur if the tractor is being pushed beyond its governed speed (such as coasting down a steep grade with a heavy implement) or if there is a failure in the speed-sensing circuit sending erratic, high-speed signals to the controller.

   Verify operator habits to confirm the tractor wasn't being pushed downhill by a heavy towed implement (mechanical overspeed cause)

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission speed sensors for chafed wires, corrosion in the connectors, or high resistance

   Check battery and alternator voltage, as low or spiking voltage can cause the ZDC controller to misinterpret sensor data

   Test the transmission output speed sensor and wheel speed sensors for proper pulse frequency signaling

   Clear and Retest

   Clear the 2242 code from the ZDC controller and perform a test drive under normal conditions to see if the code returns. If it does not, it may have been a mechanical overspeed event.

   Locate the Sensor

   If the code returns immediately or erratically, locate the transmission speed sensor on the transmission housing.

   Disconnect and Inspect

   Unplug the weather-pack connector. Inspect the male and female pins for dirt, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

   Remove the Sensor

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the speed sensor to the transmission casing. Carefully pull the sensor out (be prepared for a small amount of transmission fluid to seep out).

   Install the New Sensor

   Lubricate the heavy-duty synthetic rubber O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid to prevent pinching.

   Secure and Reconnect

   Push the new sensor into the port, tighten the retaining bolt, and plug the wiring harness back in until it clicks.

   Final Calibration

   Clear the fault codes via the diagnostic menu. Test drive the tractor to ensure the ZDC controller is reading ground speed accurately and shifting smoothly.
