2243 (519182.04) - DEC

Case IH 2243 (519182.04) - DEC – DEC (TCU): Synchro 8 Solenoid - short to GND

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the "Synchro 8" transmission solenoid has shorted to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • CX series
  • MX series
  • MC series
  • MTX series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness for areas where wire insulation may have rubbed through, causing a direct short to the chassis (ground)

  2. Check the electrical connector at the Synchro 8 solenoid for loose connections or bent pins

  3. Test the internal coil of the Synchro 8 solenoid to see if it has shorted out

  4. Check the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for an internal failure if the wiring and solenoid are intact

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Synchro 8 Solenoid

Find the solenoid valve block on the transmission.

  2. Inspect the Connector

Disconnect the harness from the Synchro 8 solenoid. Check for loose, corroded, or bent pins.

  3. Test the Wiring Harness

Trace the wiring back to the TCU. Use a multimeter to test for continuity to ground. If a short to ground is found in the harness, repair or replace the damaged wiring section.

  4. Test the Solenoid Coil

Test the solenoid coil for an internal short. If the coil has failed, it must be replaced.

  5. Evaluate the TCU

If the connector, wiring harness, and solenoid coil all test perfectly fine, the TCU may require replacement or reprogramming due to an internal failure.
