2245 (519182.17) - DEC

Case IH 2245 (519182.17) - DEC – DEC: Synchro 8 Solenoid - LSD short to GND

Issue description

The Low Side Driver (ground-switching circuit) for the transmission synchronizer solenoid (8th gear/range) has found an unintended path to chassis ground before being commanded to close. This is typically caused by a chafed wire touching the tractor frame or an internal short within the solenoid itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • CX series
  • CX90
  • CX100
  • Quantum series
  • MX series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness routing from the DEC module to the Synchro 8 Solenoid for pinched wires, rubbed insulation, or areas resting against sharp metal.

  2. Perform a harness isolation test: disconnect the electrical connector at the Synchro 8 Solenoid and at the DEC module, then use a multimeter to test the low-side control wire for continuity to a known good chassis ground.

  3. Test the Synchro 8 Solenoid pins for an internal short to the solenoid's metal housing.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Ensure the tractor is turned off and the battery is disconnected.

  2. Repair or replace wiring harness

If the wiring harness failed the isolation test, locate the chafed section of the wire. Repair the wire using an OEM-approved splice and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected transmission harness section.

  3. Remove faulty solenoid

If the solenoid itself is internally shorted to ground, remove the retaining bolts for the Synchro 8 Solenoid on the transmission valve block.

  4. Install replacement solenoid

Remove the faulty solenoid and install the replacement, ensuring the O-rings are lubricated with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid.

  5. Reconnect and clear codes

Reconnect the wiring harness, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool.

  6. Test drive tractor

Test drive the tractor, specifically shifting through the ranges to ensure the 8th synchronizer engages properly without throwing the 2245 code.
