Case IH 2245 – ZDC: ZDC - CAN message AXCDN1 counter incorrect

Issue description

The transmission controller is receiving a CAN message named 'AXCDN1' (a drivetrain/axle communication signal), but the rolling counter within the message is out of sequence or incorrect. As a safety measure, the system actively limits the maximum driving speed of the tractor.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Steiger
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Check ZDC power and ground connections, including battery voltage, fuses (e.g., F-101 / F-102), and switched power relays.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness for physical damage, chafing, or loose connections between the ZDC and engine/drivetrain controllers.

  3. Verify CAN bus terminating resistors are intact (should measure approximately 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low with battery disconnected).

  4. Scan for accompanying active CAN fault codes (like checksum errors or module timeouts) that might indicate a broader network short.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and read all active and stored fault codes to confirm if the AXCDN1 counter error is isolated.

  2. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery power to safely work on the CAN network.

  3. Inspect Connectors

Locate the ZDC (CVT Controller) and the sending module (Front Axle/Drivetrain controller). Disconnect their harness connectors and inspect for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture ingress. Clean the pins and apply dielectric grease if necessary.

  4. Perform Continuity Testing

Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the modules. Repair any open circuits, shorts to ground, or high-resistance areas in the twisted pair wiring.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the modules and battery power. Clear the fault codes using the EST.

  6. Test Drive

Test drive the tractor to verify that full speed is restored. If the wiring is perfectly intact and the fault returns immediately, the sending module or the ZDC itself may require a software flash or hardware replacement.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • ZDC / CVT Transmission Control Module

OEM Part number depends on specific tractor model/serial

  • CAN Terminating Resistor

    Generic 120-ohm CAN resistor

  • Wiring Harness Repair

Generic CAN twisted-pair wire and OEM connector pins
