Case IH 2247 – ZDC (Drivetrain Controller): Missing PTCDN1 Message (Transmission Output Shaft Speed Signal)
Issue description
The controller is not receiving the "PTCDN1" message, which carries the Transmission Output Shaft Speed (TOSS) signal. This means the controller cannot determine how fast the transmission output shaft is turning, which is critical for proper shifting and transmission control.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Steiger
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Puma
Check the cause
Monitor the Transmission Output Shaft Speed signal via the Electronic Service Tool (EST) for erratic or missing readings.
Inspect the TOSS sensor connector (X551) on the transmission housing for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Test the CAN bus communication lines and the sensor wiring harness for continuity and shorts to ground between the TOSS sensor and the ZDC controller.
Verify the fuses supplying power to the ZDC controller (e.g., F-101 on Steiger models) are intact.
Repair steps
Park machine
Safely park the machine on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate sensor
Locate the Transmission Output Shaft Speed (TOSS) sensor on the transmission housing.
Disconnect and inspect connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. If the connector is damaged or heavily corroded, it must be re-pinned or replaced (see parts list below).
Remove sensor bolt
If the wiring tests good but the EST confirmed a missing/erratic signal, remove the retaining bolt holding the TOSS sensor in place.
Extract sensor
Carefully extract the faulty TOSS sensor from the transmission housing.
Install new sensor
Lubricate the O-ring on the new TOSS sensor with clean transmission fluid and install it into the housing.
Tighten bolt
Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness to the sensor.
Clear code and test
Connect the EST laptop, clear the 2247 fault code, and perform a test drive while monitoring the TOSS parameter to verify the speed signal is restored and the transmission shifts correctly.
