Case IH 2248 – ZDC: Vehicle Speed Limited due to Park Brake Engaged
Issue description
This condition is triggered when the transmission controller detects that the tractor is moving (or attempting to move) while the system registers that the parking brake is still applied. This can be caused by operator error (driving through the brake), a mechanical failure where the brake is physically dragging, or an electrical fault in the park brake switch, pressure sensor, or solenoid circuit falsely telling the controller that the brake is engaged.

Check the cause
Physical Inspection: Ensure the park brake lever/pedal is fully released and not physically jammed.
Dash Indicator Check: Observe the instrument cluster. If the park brake warning lamp remains illuminated when the brake is released, the issue is likely electrical (switch, sensor, or wiring).
Switch Testing: Locate the park brake switch (usually at the base of the hand lever or pedal). Use a multimeter to test for proper continuity when the switch is toggled.
Pressure Sensor / Solenoid Check: On larger articulated models (like the Steiger STX), the park brake release is hydraulically controlled. Check the park brake pressure sensor (which monitors release pressure) and the park brake solenoid (often located on the valve body below the batteries) to ensure it is receiving voltage and mechanically opening.
Wiring Harness: Inspect the wiring harness between the park brake switch/sensor and the ZDC controller for chafing, shorts to ground, or open circuits.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and chock the wheels so the machine does not roll when the brake is disengaged.
Access the Switch/Sensor
Depending on the model, remove the right-hand console panels or the lower dash panels to access the mechanical park brake switch, or access the valve body to reach the pressure sensor/solenoid.
Replace Faulty Component
If the mechanical switch is faulty, disconnect the wiring pigtail, unthread the old switch, and install the replacement. If the solenoid is stuck (common on Steiger models), use a stubby wrench (often 19mm or 3/4") to unscrew the solenoid from the rear of the valve body and replace it.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect all wiring harnesses and reinstall the console panels.
Clear Fault Codes
Enter the tractor's diagnostic menu on the instrument cluster or AFS Pro monitor. Navigate to the "ECR" (Error Code Reduction) or "Live" error code mode to clear the stored 2248 fault code.
Test Drive
Start the tractor, engage and disengage the park brake to ensure the dash light turns off, and test drive to confirm the speed limitation has been lifted.
