Case IH 2249 (519183.04) - DEC – DEC (Drivetrain Electronic Controller): Synchro S Solenoid Short to Ground

Issue description

The DEC has detected a 'Short to Ground' on the circuit controlling the Synchro S Solenoid. This means the voltage on the solenoid's control wire is lower than expected, typically caused by chafed wiring touching the chassis, a melted connector, or an internal short inside the solenoid coil itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • CX50
  • CX60

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the 2-pin plug at the Synchro S solenoid and measure the resistance across the two pins. A healthy coil should measure exactly 6.8 Ohms. If it reads 0 Ohms or significantly lower, the coil is internally shorted.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the DEC to the solenoid. Look for rubbed-through insulation or pinched wires shorting against the tractor frame or transmission housing.

  3. With the key ON, check the supply voltage at the connector to ensure the controller is sending the commanded 12V signal.

Repair steps

  1. Locate solenoid

Locate the Synchro S / Powershift solenoid on the transmission valve block.

  2. Disconnect plug

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical plug.

  3. Clean area

Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Remove faulty solenoid or coil

The solenoid is a bolt-on style with an M20 x 1.5 metric thread. Unbolt the faulty solenoid assembly or remove the retaining nut to slide off just the coil (depending on which part is shorted).

  5. Install new part

Install the new solenoid/coil, thread it in carefully, and torque to standard specifications for M20 hydraulic fittings.

  6. Reconnect and clear codes

Reconnect the 2-pin plug and clear the fault codes from the DEC.
