Case IH 2249 – ENG: Injector Metering Rail 1 Fuel Pressure lower than commanded pressure (Data Valid but Below Normal Operational Range - Most Severe Level)

Issue description

The ECM detects that the fuel rail pressure has dropped significantly below the commanded pressure threshold.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fuel system codes (such as 559) using an electronic service tool. If present, follow their troubleshooting trees first.

  2. Inspect the fuel tank breather to ensure it is not plugged.

  3. Check the low-pressure fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump for kinks, pinholes, or blockages.

  4. Inspect the primary water-separator and secondary fuel filters for clogging or heavy contamination.

  5. Install a mechanical fuel pressure gauge at the pressure filter outlet side and run the engine to monitor low-pressure fuel delivery.

  6. Inspect the high-pressure fuel connectors and injector tubes for leaks (often occurring only when the engine and fuel are hot).

  7. Check the fuel rail pressure relief valve (limit valve) to see if it is weak and bleeding rail pressure back into the return line prematurely.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Supply Restrictions

    Clear any blockages in the fuel tank breather and replace any collapsed or damaged low-pressure fuel supply lines.

  2. Replace Fuel Filters

    If the filters are restricted, replace both the primary water-separator and the secondary fuel filter. Prime the fuel system.

  3. Address High-Pressure Leaks

    If the high-pressure injector connectors are leaking, re-torque them to the updated OEM specification (e.g., 37-38 ft. lbs.). If they still leak, replace the connector tubes.

  4. Replace the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve

    If diagnostic tests show the relief valve is bleeding off pressure before the maximum limit is reached, remove the old valve from the fuel rail and install a new one.

  5. Replace the Fuel Metering Actuator / High-Pressure Pump

    If the low-pressure supply is good, there are no leaks, and the relief valve is holding, the high-pressure fuel pump (CP3) or its electronic fuel metering actuator is likely failing to supply enough fuel to the rail. Replace the actuator or the entire high-pressure pump assembly.

  6. Clear Codes and Road Test

    Use the diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 2249 code and run the machine under load to verify the rail pressure matches the commanded pressure.
