Case IH 2249 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): Injector Metering Rail 1 Fuel Pressure lower than commanded pressure (Data Valid but Below Normal Operational Range - Most Severe Level)

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the actual fuel pressure in the common rail is lower than the pressure commanded by the ECM. This indicates a failure in the fuel system's ability to maintain adequate high pressure, which typically results in symptoms like hard starting, low power, or excessive engine smoke.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fuel system fault codes using an electronic service tool and troubleshoot those first

  2. Perform a low-pressure system check to verify vacuum does not exceed 5 inches of Hg and supply pressure is adequate (e.g., minimum 72 psi under load)

  3. Conduct a hot engine leak test on a dynamometer or field test with a fuel pressure gauge to duplicate intermittent faults

  4. Test the fuel pressure relief valve (limit valve) on the fuel rail to see if it is weak and prematurely bleeding off pressure

Repair steps

  1. Verify Fuel Supply

    Inspect the primary and secondary fuel filters. Replace them if they are restricted or if there is heavy water/debris contamination.

  2. Inspect for Air in Fuel

    Check the low-pressure fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump for loose fittings or cracked hoses that could draw air into the system.

  3. Test the Pressure Relief Valve

    Perform a return flow test on the fuel pressure relief valve. If fuel is leaking from the relief valve return line while the engine is cranking or running below the maximum pressure threshold, the valve is defective and must be replaced.

  4. Inspect High-Pressure Connectors

    If the relief valve is holding, inspect the high-pressure fuel connector tubes going to the injectors. Re-torque the connector nuts to OEM specifications. If a connector is leaking (especially when hot), replace the connector and inspect the injector body for damage.

  5. Test the Fuel Pump Actuator / Gear Pump

    If no leaks are found in the rail or injectors, test the fuel gear pump flow and the fuel pump actuator (metering valve) to ensure the high-pressure pump is receiving adequate fuel volume to compress.

  6. Clear and Validate

    After replacing the defective component, use the electronic service tool to clear Fault Code 2249. Run the machine under load to verify the commanded rail pressure matches the actual rail pressure.
