Case IH 2252 – ZDC: CAN message ExtDrivetrainStateDes checksum incorrect

Issue description

Communication error on the CAN bus indicating the 'ExtDrivetrainStateDes' message checksum is incorrect, meaning the data packet received by the controller was corrupted or incomplete. The machine will typically default to a safe state, limiting maximum driving speed, disabling the PTO, or locking out directional shuttle shifting.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Steiger Series (370, 420, 470, 500, 540, 580, and 620)
  • Case IH Quadtrac & Rowtrac Models
  • Case IH Magnum & Puma CVX/CVT Series

Check the cause

  1. Check battery and system voltage, including power distribution fuses (F-087, F-095) and relays, as low voltage can cause CAN checksum errors.

  2. Perform a CAN bus resistance test at the diagnostic port with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or missing terminating resistor).

  3. Inspect wiring harnesses and connectors between the ZDC and TCU for chafed wires, moisture ingress, or backed-out pins.

  4. Check for active service bulletins requiring a software re-flash for the ZDC or TCU to resolve CAN timeout or checksum sensitivities.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Access the ZDC

Locate the ZDC controller, which is typically integrated into the cab power distribution module area.

  3. Clean and Reseat Connectors

Disconnect the main harness connectors from the ZDC and the TCU. Spray the pins with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Ensure no pins are bent or corroded.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the CAN lines, splice in a repair wire using OEM-approved weather-sealed crimp connectors. Twist the CAN High and CAN Low wires together (approximately 1 twist per inch) to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect all modules and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive 2252 fault code.

  6. Test Drive

Operate the tractor, engaging the drivetrain and PTO to verify that the ExtDrivetrainStateDes message is broadcasting correctly and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • ZDC Controller (Zone Data Controller / Cab Power Distribution Module)

Varies heavily by specific tractor serial number and cab configuration. Must be sourced via a Case IH dealer using the machine's PIN. Requires programming/flashing with the Case IH EST tool.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Repair Kit / Twisted Pair Wire

Standard J1939 CAN bus twisted-pair wire and Deutsch/AMP connector pin kits.
