2253 (519183.06) - DEC

Case IH 2253 (519183.06) - DEC – DEC: Synchro S Solenoid - LSD short to HSD

Issue description

This fault code indicates an electrical short circuit involving the transmission's Synchro S Solenoid, where the Low Side Driver (the ground/return circuit) is shorted directly to the High Side Driver (the power supply circuit).

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Tractors equipped with electronic powershift or continuously variable transmissions

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the DEC to the transmission valve block for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or heat damage that could cause the High Side and Low Side wires to touch.

  2. Perform a Solenoid Coil Test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the Synchro S Solenoid and measure the resistance across the two pins. A reading near 0 ohms indicates the solenoid coil is internally shorted.

  3. Perform a Harness Short Test: With the solenoid and the DEC harness disconnected, measure for continuity between the High Side Driver wire and the Low Side Driver wire in the harness. Continuity indicates a shorted wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

Ensure the machine is safe to work on.

  2. Locate the Synchro S solenoid on the transmission control valve block.

Identify the component for repair or replacement.

  3. If the harness is shorted: Locate the damaged section of the wiring harness. Repair the wires using appropriate weather-sealed splices, or replace that section of the transmission harness.

Addresses a short circuit found in the wiring harness.

  4. If the solenoid is shorted: Remove the retaining bolt or snap ring holding the Synchro S solenoid in the valve block.

Prepares the faulty solenoid for extraction.

  5. Extract the faulty solenoid. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque the retaining fastener to OEM specifications.

    Replaces an internally shorted solenoid.

  6. Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

Restores power and communication to the component.

  7. Turn the ignition on. Once the fault has been corrected, you may need to depress the 'Reset' button on the programmable display to clear the fault code.

Clears the fault code from the system.

  8. Test drive the tractor to ensure the transmission synchronizes correctly and the code does not return.

    Verifies the repair was successful.
