Case IH 2253 – ZDC: ZDC - CAN message ExtPoti00 counter incorrect

Issue description

Indicates a CAN bus communication error where the rolling counter for the 'ExtPoti00' CAN message (transmitting data from external potentiometers like the hand throttle, clutch pedal, or Multicontroller drive lever) is incorrect, out of sequence, or missing. The system will default affected values to 0%, limit maximum driving speed, or force the transmission into neutral.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor live data for the hand throttle, clutch pedal, and Multicontroller joystick. Look for values that are frozen, dropping out, or reading 0%.

  2. Check the CAN bus lines (CAN High and CAN Low) between the ZDC and the armrest/joystick controller. Look for chafed wires, pinch points in the armrest pivot, or shorts to ground.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connectors at the ZDC and the armrest controller. Look for pushed-out pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  4. Measure the resistance across the CAN bus with the battery disconnected. It should read approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a broken wire or a failed terminating resistor.

Repair steps

  1. Power down the tractor, turn off the master disconnect switch, and disconnect the battery.

    Ensure the machine is fully powered off before beginning electrical work.

  2. Locate the ZDC and the armrest controller.

    The ZDC is typically located in the right-hand cab console or behind the seat, depending on the model.

  3. Disconnect the harness connectors at both modules.

    Treat the pins with electrical contact cleaner and verify that no pins are bent or loose.

  4. Repair any damaged wiring sections.

    If a wiring fault is found (especially common where the harness flexes at the armrest pivot), repair the damaged section using twisted-pair CAN wire and heat-shrink solder connectors.

  5. Replace the transmitting module if wiring tests perfectly.

    If the wiring and connections test perfectly, the module transmitting the ExtPoti00 message (usually the armrest controller or the specific potentiometer assembly) has likely suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.

  6. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the EST, and perform a functional test.

    Test the transmission, clutch pedal, and hand throttle to verify the repair.
