Case IH 2258 – ZDC: Seat Switch Closed for 20 Continuous Hours (Not Plausible)

The operator presence switch (seat switch) has registered as 'closed' (occupied) for 20 continuous hours. The system flags this as 'Not Plausible' because it is physically unlikely for an operator to remain seated for 20 hours without standing up. This safety mechanism detects if the seat switch has been intentionally bypassed, is mechanically stuck closed, or has an electrical short circuit. The tractor will initiate a derate until the system can verify the switch is functioning properly by seeing it cycle from closed to open.

   Have the operator stand up while the key is ON to see if the switch state changes from closed to open

   Inspect the wiring harness directly under the seat cushion for intentional bypasses (e.g., jumper wire or paperclip)

   Check for debris, tools, or heavy objects wedged under or behind the seat cushion that might be keeping the mechanical switch depressed

   Disconnect the seat switch and use a multimeter to check for continuity (should be closed with weight applied, open without weight)

   Check the tractor-side harness for a short to the supply voltage (B+ or 5V reference) or a short to ground

   Prepare machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn the engine off, and engage the parking brake.

   Access the switch

   Tilt the seat forward or remove the bottom seat cushion (depending on the specific seat model) to access the operator presence switch.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical pigtail connecting the seat switch to the cab harness.

   Remove bypass jumper

   If a bypass jumper is found in the harness connector, remove it and plug the OEM switch back in.

   Remove faulty switch

   If the switch is internally shorted/stuck closed, unclip or unscrew the switch assembly from the seat suspension base.

   Install new switch

   Install the new seat switch and route the wiring safely away from the mechanical suspension scissor mechanisms to prevent future pinching or shorting.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Calibrate and clear fault

   Sit in the seat, turn the ignition to the ON position, and then stand up. This will cycle the switch, prove to the ZDC module that the switch is operational, and clear the 'Not Plausible' state.
