Case IH 2259-11 - UCM – UCM: Rear pilot head #8 reporting that the spool was not in neutral at power-on.

The Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote (EHR) pilot head on rear remote valve #8 detected that the main hydraulic spool was not in its centered (neutral) position when the tractor was keyed on. As a safety mechanism to prevent unintended hydraulic movement or implement dropping, the system throws an EHR fault and locks out the hydraulic functions for that specific remote until the tractor is restarted or the issue is resolved.

   Ensure the physical remote lever or switch in the cab for remote #8 is not stuck, sticky, or being held out of the neutral detent position when the tractor is turned on.

   Inspect the electrical connector at the pilot head on the rear valve block for mud and moisture, which can cause voltage irregularities or CAN communication errors.

   Swap the pilot head from remote #8 with a known good pilot head from another remote (e.g., remote #7). If the fault code changes to the new remote number, the pilot head is internally failed. If the fault stays on #8, the main valve spool may be physically binding or there is a wiring harness issue.

   Attempt to run an EHR valve calibration through the tractor's display as a temporary fix (this will fail if the internal position transducer has failed).

   Preparation

   Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the tractor, and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the rear remote valve block. Hydraulic systems are highly sensitive to contamination; any dirt entering the valve body during replacement can cause immediate failure of the new part.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical harness from pilot head #8. Remove the mounting screws (typically hex/Allen head) securing the pilot head to the main valve body, and carefully lift the pilot head off.

   Installation

   Ensure the mating surface is perfectly clean. Install the new pilot head with its new O-rings/seals. Torque the mounting screws to OEM spec and reconnect the electrical harness.

   Readdressing & Calibration

   After replacing the pilot head, you must reassign the valve addresses in the tractor's display so the controller knows which cab lever controls the new valve. Finally, perform an EHR valve calibration (which may require a special service tool depending on the tractor series) to tune the valve for proper flow and neutral setpoints.
