2260-02 - UCM

Case IH 2260-02 - UCM – UCM: Vehicle controller loss of communication with rear pilot head #8.

Issue description

The control module has lost CAN bus communication with the electronic actuator specifically controlling Rear Remote Valve #8. This is typically caused by a failed pilot head internal circuit (which can sometimes short out and take down the entire CAN bus network), a damaged wiring harness, or a corroded connector.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect Series (e.g., 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Steiger & Quadtrac Series (e.g., 350, 370, 400, 420, 450, 470, 500, 580)
  • Puma & Optum Series (e.g., Puma 185-240, Optum 270-300)

Check the cause

  1. Isolate the CAN Bus: Unplug the electrical connector at rear pilot head #8. If a short inside this specific pilot head was crashing the CAN bus, unplugging it will often bring the rest of the remote valves back online.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the harness leading to remote #8 for pinched wires, rodent damage, or corrosion inside the connector pins.

  3. Check Power and Ground: Verify that the pilot head is receiving proper 12V power and ground from the UCM.

  4. Swap Test: Swap the pilot head from valve #8 with a known good pilot head from another valve (e.g., valve #7). If the fault code changes to the new location (e.g., loss of communication with pilot head #7), the pilot head is definitively the point of failure. If the code remains on #8, the issue is in the tractor's wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Ensure the tractor is turned off, the key is removed, and hydraulic pressure is relieved from the rear remotes.

  2. Disconnect Electronics

Unplug the CAN bus electrical connector from the faulty pilot head #8.

  3. Remove the Pilot Head

Remove the mounting hardware (typically hex socket screws, e.g., M5 x 20mm) securing the pilot head to the main remote valve body.

  4. Install the New Part

Mount the new pilot head valve assembly onto the valve body and torque the hex screws to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the new pilot head.

  6. Calibrate the Valves

You must perform a hydraulic remote valve calibration. This is done using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop or through the tractor's AFS Pro display calibration menus.

  7. Clear Codes

Clear the 2260-02 fault code from the UCM and test the remote valve for proper operation.
