Case IH 2274 – ZDC: CAN bus communication failure regarding the foot throttle
Issue description
The system is reporting that the ExtPoti00 (External Potentiometer 00) signal, which corresponds to the DrivingPedalValue (the foot accelerator pedal position), is either sending an invalid signal or is completely missing from the network. Because the controller cannot determine the position of the foot pedal, the tractor may default to a restricted speed mode, limit engine RPM, or disable the foot throttle entirely.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Steiger T4B
- Steiger CVT
- Puma CVX
- Magnum CVT
- Maxxum CVT
Check the cause
Check the foot throttle pedal for physical damage, debris, or obstructions preventing full travel.
Inspect the electrical connector at the base of the foot pedal for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.
Test the wiring harness between the foot pedal sensor and the cab controller/ZDC for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.
Verify the fuses powering the ZDC controller (e.g., fuses F-101 and F-102).
Verify that the CAN bus lines are intact and that the module physically reading the pedal is communicating with the ZDC.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to protect the CAN network.
Test the Sensor
Disconnect the foot pedal sensor. Use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference and ground from the controller.
Replace the Pedal
If the wiring and voltages are correct but the ZDC still reports an error (indicating the internal potentiometer has failed), unbolt the faulty foot pedal assembly from the cab floor.
Install New Part
Mount the replacement OEM foot throttle pedal and securely click the electrical connector into place.
Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. You will likely need to use the tractor's AFS Pro display (via the calibration menus) or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop software to perform a "Drive Pedal Calibration" so the ZDC learns the new minimum and maximum voltage values of the new potentiometer.
Clear Codes
Clear the inactive 2274 fault code and test drive the tractor to ensure the foot throttle responds smoothly.
