Case IH 2281 (1894.19) - DEC – DEC: CAN 2 - RPTO_EngagCmd Error
Issue description
This fault code indicates a communication or command error over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus regarding the Rear Power Take-Off (RPTO). The electronic command signal to engage the rear PTO is either missing, corrupted, or failing to transmit properly over the CAN 2 network.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma Series
- Magnum Series
- Steiger Series
- T8 Series
- T9 Series
Check the cause
Probe the CAN 2 network at the diagnostic connector or DEC harness to verify CAN 2 HI (Pin C) and CAN 2 LO (Pin D) are communicating at 250 kbps and check terminating resistors (typically 60 ohms).
Test the Rear PTO engagement switches, including the primary cab switch and remote fender switches (e.g., right fender switch A-402 and left fender switch A-418).
Use a diagnostic tool to monitor live data for the PTO speed sensor, twist sensor, and RPTO PWM solenoid valve current feedback.
Inspect the wiring harness between the UCM, the DEC, and the RPTO solenoids for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins that could interrupt the CAN 2 signal.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible scanner (e.g., Jaltest) to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Read and Record Data
Verify the 2281 (1894.19) code in the DEC. Check for any accompanying codes related to the UCM or CAN bus voltage.
Inspect Physical Connections
Disconnect the harness at the DEC and the RPTO engagement switches. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and check for pushed-out pins.
Repair CAN/Wiring Faults
If the CAN 2 lines show high resistance or a short to ground, trace the harness along the chassis to locate and repair the damaged wire.
Replace Faulty Components
If the wiring is intact but the engagement command is still not registering, replace the faulty Rear PTO switch or the RPTO PWM solenoid valve.
Calibrate and Clear
After repairing the wiring or replacing parts, use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. You may need to perform a DEC transmission and RPTO calibration procedure to ensure the controllers are synced.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and engage the Rear PTO using both the cab and fender switches to confirm the error does not return.
