Case IH 2283-02 - UCM – UCM: Front Pilot Head Comm Loss

The User Control Module (UCM) or main Vehicle Controller has lost communication with the Front pilot head #1 over the CAN bus network. The erratic or intermittent signal is typically caused by a physical wiring issue, a loss of power or ground to the module, or an internal hardware failure within the pilot head itself.

   Check the battery and system voltage levels, as low voltage can cause communication drops across the CAN network.

   Locate the wiring harness connecting the Front pilot head #1 to the UCM and perform a thorough visual inspection for scraping, rubbing, open wires, or signs of corrosion.

   Inspect all connectors and circuitry for security, green corrosion, and bent or pushed-out pins.

   Use a digital multimeter to test the CAN bus lines for continuity and verify that the reference voltage (often 5V) and ground are being properly supplied from the control module to the pilot head.

   Disconnect power

   Disconnect the machine's battery before beginning any electrical repairs to prevent short circuits.

   Isolate the circuit

   Disconnect the harness connectors at both the Front pilot head #1 and the UCM.

   Clean contacts

   If light corrosion is found on the connector pins, clean them using an appropriate electrical contact cleaner and ensure the pins are seated tightly.

   Repair wiring

   If multimeter continuity testing detects an absence of power, ground, or a break in the CAN lines, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or splice in a replacement pigtail connector.

   Replace component

   If the wiring, power, and ground are all verified as fully functional and within acceptable ranges, the Front pilot head #1 module itself has likely suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

   Clear codes

   Reconnect all modules, restore battery power, and use a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the stored fault codes and verify that communication has been restored.
