Case IH 2283-04 - UCM – UCM: Front pilot head #1 reporting supply voltage low

Issue description

The Universal Control Module (UCM) has detected that the electrical supply voltage going to the #1 front electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) pilot head is below the normal operating threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum Series (250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (Steiger 500, 580 Quadtrac)
  • Case IH Puma Series (Puma 150, 165, 175, 180-260)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the UCM and the front pilot head #1 for pinched wires, corrosion, or loose connections that could cause a voltage drop.

  2. Disconnect the pilot head and use a multimeter to measure the supply voltage at the harness connector with the key ON. If voltage is within spec, the pilot head's internal circuitry is likely faulty. If voltage is low, trace the harness back to the UCM.

  3. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for related active codes (e.g., 1979.12, 1955.12). Multiple pilot head or CAN errors indicate a shared ground, UCM power supply issue, or failing UCM rather than an isolated pilot head failure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Ensure the tractor is turned off, the key is removed, and all hydraulic pressure in the system is completely relieved.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the remote valve stack. Contamination causes immediate valve failure, so the work area must be spotless.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty #1 front pilot head. Remove the mounting bolts securing the pilot head to the remote valve body.

  4. O-Ring Replacement

Remove the old pilot head. Remove and discard the old O-rings between the slice/pilot head and the valve body. Install new, lubricated O-rings.

  5. Installation

Mount the new pilot head onto the valve body and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  6. Reassignment & Calibration

Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's advanced display to reassign the valve addresses so the UCM knows which lever controls the new valve.

  7. Tuning

Perform the EHR valve calibration procedure to tune the valve for proper flow and function.
