Case IH 2288 (689.19) - DEC – Engine Control Module (ECM): Turbocharger 1 Speed - Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range

Issue description

The engine's computer is receiving a signal from the turbocharger speed sensor that is higher than the acceptable factory parameters, often resulting in an intermittent loss of boost or a derated engine state.

Check the cause

  1. Check for secondary codes using a diagnostic tool (such as 2973 for Intake Manifold Pressure or 2347 for Turbocharger Compressor Outlet Temperature).

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and the turbocharger speed sensor connector for any bad spots, corrosion, or breaks.

  3. Verify ECM calibration to ensure the machine is not running a faulty 'delete' tune or incorrect ECM calibration, which can suppress check engine lights or cause erratic turbo speed readings.

Repair steps

  1. Access sensor

    Locate the turbocharger speed sensor on the turbocharger housing.

  2. Test circuit

    Use a multimeter to verify continuity in the wiring between the sensor connector and the ECM.

  3. Repair wiring

    If a short or broken wire is found, repair the wiring harness and re-test.

  4. Replace sensor

    If the wiring and connectors are in good condition but the code persists, the turbocharger speed sensor itself has failed and must be replaced.

  5. Clear codes

    After replacing the sensor, use your diagnostic tool to clear the inactive faults from the ECM memory and test operate the machine to ensure the code does not return.
