Case IH 2292 – ENG: Fuel Inlet Meter Device higher than expected

Issue description

The engine control module has detected that the fuel inlet metering device (often referred to as the Fuel Control Actuator [FCA], M-PROP, or fuel metering valve) is operating outside of its expected parameters. Specifically, the flow demand or electrical feedback is higher than what the engine mapping expects for the current load and RPM. This usually points to a failing metering valve on the high-pressure fuel pump, a wiring issue, or a fuel supply restriction causing the valve to overcompensate.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Fuel Inlet Metering Device on the high-pressure fuel pump for chafed wires, corrosion, or a short to ground/power.

  2. Check the low-pressure fuel supply to ensure the electric lift pump is supplying adequate fuel. A restricted fuel filter or failing lift pump can cause the metering device to overcompensate.

  3. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the commanded vs. actual fuel rail pressure and the metering valve duty cycle. Erratic commanded pressure or a maxed-out duty cycle indicates a sticking valve.

  4. Inspect the fuel filters for water or debris contamination, which can cause the internal plunger of the metering device to stick.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel inlet metering device to prevent any dirt from entering the fuel system.

  2. Disconnect Electronics

    Unplug the electrical connector from the fuel inlet metering device.

  3. Remove the Valve

    Remove the mounting fasteners (typically Torx or Allen bolts) securing the metering device to the high-pressure pump.

  4. Extract the Valve

    Carefully pull the metering device out of the pump housing.

  5. Install the New Valve

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new fuel inlet metering device with clean diesel fuel. Carefully insert it into the pump housing, ensuring the O-rings are not pinched.

  6. Torque Fasteners

    Install the mounting bolts and torque them to the OEM specification found in your specific engine's service manual.

  7. Reassemble and Prime

    Reconnect the electrical connector. Reconnect the battery and cycle the key to allow the electric lift pump to prime the low-pressure fuel system.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect the diagnostic tool, clear the 2292 fault code, start the engine, and verify that the code does not return under load.
