Case IH 2292 – Engine Control Module (ENG / ECM): Fuel Inlet Meter Device higher than expected
Issue description
The engine's electronic control module (ECM) monitors the fuel rail pressure and changes the flow command to the electronic fuel control actuator (the fuel inlet meter device) to maintain the proper pressure. This fault code triggers when the fuel flow demand is higher than expected. Essentially, the system is struggling to maintain adequate rail pressure, forcing the ECM to command the metering valve to open wider and supply more fuel to the high-pressure pump than it normally should under current operating conditions. This typically results in a derated engine, low power, and potentially hard starting or engine smoke.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the entire fuel system for external fuel leaks.
Inlet Restriction Test: Check for high fuel inlet restriction, such as pinched, collapsed, or blocked OEM fuel supply lines.
Filter Inspection: Check for a plugged or heavily restricted fuel filter (both primary and secondary).
Lift Pump Pressure Test: Test the electric lift pump to ensure it is supplying adequate low-pressure fuel to the high-pressure gear pump.
Actuator Electrical Test: Measure the electrical resistance of the electronic fuel control actuator to ensure it is within specification and check the wiring harness for shorts or opens.
Actuator Mechanical Check: Inspect the electronic fuel control actuator to see if it is mechanically stuck or restricted.
System Return (Leak-off) Test: Measure the return flow from the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors. Excessive return flow (internal leakage) prevents the system from building pressure, causing the ECM to over-command the inlet meter device.
Repair steps
Resolve Supply Issues
If diagnostic tests show high inlet restriction or low supply pressure, replace the plugged fuel filters, clear line restrictions, or replace the failing electric lift pump.
Replace the Metering Device
If the electronic fuel control actuator (Fuel Inlet Meter Device) fails the resistance test or is found to be mechanically stuck, remove it from the high-pressure fuel pump and install a new unit.
Address High-Pressure Leaks
If the leak-off test reveals excessive fuel return, replace the faulty fuel injector(s) or the high-pressure fuel pump as indicated by the test results.
Clear and Verify
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool.
Drive Cycle
Once the physical repair has been made, this specific fault code requires approximately 15 to 20 minutes of road testing or a dynamometer run under load for the ECM to verify the fix and set the fault code to inactive.
