Case IH 2293 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel Inlet Meter Device flow demand lower than expected

The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that it has to command a significantly lower fuel flow than normally expected to maintain the desired fuel rail pressure for the current engine load and speed. This typically indicates that the system is building pressure too easily or failing to bleed off pressure.

   Check for related active codes, especially for the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor or Fueling Actuator Circuit (e.g., Code 2311), and address electrical codes first.

   Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the Fuel Inlet Meter Device for corrosion, pushed pins, or chafing.

   Inspect fuel return lines from the high-pressure pump and fuel rail back to the tank for pinches, kinks, or blockages causing backpressure.

   Use a diagnostic tool to compare 'Commanded Fuel Rail Pressure' versus 'Actual Fuel Rail Pressure' to see if actual pressure is spiking higher than commanded.

   Safety First

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable. Allow the engine to cool and the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize completely before opening any lines.

   Clear Restrictions

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a kinked or blocked fuel return line, replace or clear the line, then retest the machine.

   Replace the Fuel Inlet Meter Device

   If the return lines and wiring are intact, the metering valve itself is likely mechanically sticking. Locate the high-pressure fuel pump (CP3 pump). Disconnect the electrical connector from the Fuel Inlet Meter Device. Remove the mounting screws securing the valve to the pump housing. Carefully extract the valve, ensuring no dirt or debris enters the high-pressure pump. Lubricate the O-rings on the new Fuel Inlet Meter Device with clean diesel fuel. Install the new valve, torque the mounting screws to OEM specifications, and reconnect the harness.

   Prime the System

   Turn the key to the ON position to allow the electric lift pump to prime the low-pressure fuel system. You may need to cycle the key several times.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 2293 code, and test run the engine under load to verify the repair.
