Case IH 2297 – UCM (Universal Control Module): UCM Error Length on CAN2

Network communication failure indicating that data packets transmitted on the CAN2 network are not the expected size. This is usually caused by physical layer issues such as faulty cables, electrical noise/interference, incorrect termination resistance, or a malfunctioning node dropping data.

   Check for moisture and corrosion in the UCM and CAN2 harness connectors

   Perform voltage and ground tests to verify the UCM is receiving proper operating voltage (voltage drops can cause modules to drop off the CAN bus)

   Inspect the CAN2 network wiring harness for chafing, shorts to ground, or physical damage

   Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to identify missing nodes and see if other modules on CAN2 are failing to communicate

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect battery power before servicing the UCM.

   Inspect connectors

   Disconnect the multi-pin OEM connectors from the UCM and inspect the pins.

   Repair harness

   If wiring damage is found on the CAN2 lines, repair the harness using OEM-approved splicing techniques.

   Diagnose UCM

   If the wiring, termination resistors, and power/ground circuits test good, the UCM itself may have an internal hardware failure.

   Replace UCM

   Replace the UCM.

   Program UCM

   Flash/program the new UCM with the correct machine software using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) so it can communicate with the rest of the tractor's network.
