Case IH 23 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Electronic Control Module (ECM): FNR (Forward/Neutral/Reverse) switch and circuit malfunction

Issue description

A malfunction within the Forward/Neutral/Reverse (FNR) switch or its associated circuit. This is triggered by a disconnection/open circuit, a short circuit (in the FNR switch or Clutch Pack PWM solenoid coil), or an illogical state where conflicting signals are sent to the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the FNR switch on the steering column (or multi-function joystick) to the ECM for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or rodent damage (common causes of short circuits).

  2. Disconnect the FNR switch connector (often labeled C075 or similar) and check for damage, moisture, or corrosion. Ensure the pins are straight and the fit is tight.

  3. To check for an internal open circuit, disconnect the FNR switch, place it in Neutral, and measure resistance across the switch pins (e.g., 2.56K Ohms expected; infinite resistance indicates an open circuit).

  4. To check for a short circuit, leave the harness disconnected and test the machine-side connector pins for a short to ground while moving the shuttle lever into Forward and Reverse.

  5. To verify if the switch is sending signals (illogical state/communication loss), turn ignition ON (engine off), move FNR lever from Neutral to Forward, and then to Reverse, and listen closely to the side console for the 'click' of the neutral start relay.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Switch

    Remove the plastic steering column shrouds or the multi-function joystick casing to expose the FNR switch assembly.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

    Unplug the electrical connector from the base of the FNR switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

    Remove the mounting screws or retaining clips holding the FNR switch to the column/lever assembly.

  5. Install the New Part

    Seat the new FNR switch into the mounting bracket and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reinstall the steering column shrouds.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Clear the stored fault codes (on some models, this is done via the diagnostic menu on the dash, or by cycling the PTO/FNR lever a specific number of times within 5 seconds).

  8. Test Operation

    Start the tractor and test the Forward, Neutral, and Reverse engagements to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly and the code does not return.
